HOW MUCH DOES THE HEARING EVALUATION COST?We never charge for a hearing evaluation. We feel it is important for everyone to have a baseline hearing test and will never charge for that. We also don’t charge for followup office visits, or retests and adjustments of devices.
-
HOW LONG DOES THE EVALUATION TAKE? AND WHAT CAN I EXPECT?The full evaluation takes approximately one hour, maybe longer if you choose to demo a set of devices. Using the information you have provided from the patient information sheet, your hearing professional will discuss your hearing concerns with you, asking you for more details as needed. Your hearing professional looks into your ears with a video-otoscope, a small camera which projects a video image of your external ear canal onto a TV screen. The video-otoscope is no bigger than the hand held otoscope most doctors use to check your ears. The hearing care professional fits you with soft expandable disposable ear plugs that ensure the most accurate readings of your hearing. (Headsets are not as accurate.) Your hearing professional takes you through a series of hearing tests: Examples: Air Conduction Testing using basic tones or warble tones – Press a button when you hear the tone Bone Conduction Testing placing a headband across the head – Press a button when you hear or feel the tone Repeat the word you hear Repeat sentences heard through background noise These various hearing tests pinpoint problems: in which ear(s) and to what extent, what frequencies, what volumes, what level of background noise interferes with your understanding, etc.

IS THERE AN ADJUSTMENT PERIOD FOR THE WEARING OF HEARING AIDS?First, you need to understand that it is not possible for a hearing aid to completely restore your hearing. What it can do is enhance sound and thus allow you to hear better. Since hearing loss is gradual, over the years you may have become unaccustomed to normal environmental sounds such as traffic noise, the hum of a refrigerator or air conditioner, nature sounds, or background conversation. Therefore, when you begin to wear hearing aids, it is necessary to re-educate your brain to practice selective listening and learn once again to choose only those sounds that you wish to hear and ignore the rest. It is important that you wear your hearing aids as much as possible. This is the best way for you to get used to them and the way that they work. This also helps you to become more skilled at recognizing sound direction, learning what hearing aid settings work best in different situations, and using visual clues in difficult hearing environments. Patience is the key. Your friends and family can be very helpful throughout the entire process. Encourage them to speak to you in a normal voice without over enunciating or over emphasizing their lip movements. These people can be very helpful to you as you become accustomed to your new hearing instruments. If, for some reason, you continue to find the adjustment to be difficult, your hearing professional will be happy to answer any questions which you may have and help you solve any of your hearing-related problems.
